Learn about hydraulic cylinder and actuator symbols

The top symbol shows a double acting single rod cylinder.

The middle symbol is the same except it the cylinder has adjustable cushions on both sides.

The bottom symbol shows a basic single acting cylinder.

Rotary actuator symbols

rotary actuator symbols

Rotary actuators come in a number of formats from cylinder drives to hydraulic motors.

The top symbol shows a rotary actuator or swivel drive with limited swivel angle and two directions of flow.

The middle symbol shows a single acting, semi-rotary actuator or swivel drive. This means it only receives flow through one port connection and a spring to return it to its static condition.

The bottom symbol shows a standard hydraulic motor which is also a form of rotary actuator.

Telescopic cylinder symbols

telescopic cylinder symbol

Telescopic cylinders can extend to several times their own length because they have several cascading cylinder rods and bores.

The top symbol shows a single-acting telescopic cylinder.

The bottom symbol shows a double-acting telescopic cylinder.

What is the installed cylinder angle

Does the cylinder symbol direction indicate the angle the cylinder is installed at..

Not officially and don't rely on it. However, it does help to know the installed angle so many designers will try to show symbol at the correct cylinder angle, if possible.
