Suggested exercises and observations

1. Select drop down box menu 3 (Calculate pressure drop over orifice)

♦ Increase the flow and observe how the pressure drop across the orifice increases.

♦ Record the size and speed of a cylinder in your business (or make one up) then enter the pressure and flow details above to predict the size of the control orifice that is used inside the system.

Experiment 1: Consider a pump with fixed displacement.

Question 1: How does the output flow change if the pump speed increases?

The flow will increase proportionally with the speed.

Experiment 2: Consider a constant flow along a pipe and then the pipework diameter reduces.

Question 2: What will happen to the fluid velocity?

The fluid velocity will increase.

Experiment 3: Consider the different ways flow is controlled.

Question 3: How many methods are there?

Two main and one that is not common. Pump displacement and orifice restrictions are common methods to control flow. Changing the displacement of a drive motor is possible but not common.
